Century Aluminum has announced two new expansion programmes at its Sebree, Kentucky smelter that will increase the production of both value-added and secondary aluminium. The programmes, which are expected to be completed in Q1 2019, will improve the smelter’s product mix by adding 90,000 tpy of billets and increase the smelter’s overall output by adding 20,000 tpy of secondary (scrap reprocessing) capacity. Sebree is now expected to produce 230,000 tpy of aluminium (both primary and secondary) products in 2019, including 175,000 tpy of billet.
“With the 150,000-tonne restart of Century’s Hawesville smelter nearing completion, we are now able to continue to reinvest in our plants to increase value-added production and enter the expanding secondary market,” said Michael A. Bless, president and CEO of Century Aluminum. As a result of the programmes, Sebree plans to add nearly 50 new employees.
