ASI certifies Maaden Aluminium plants against two standards

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) announced that Maaden Aluminium has been successfully certified against ASI Performance and Chain of Custody (CoC) Standards for responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium. The heart of the integrated facility - its smelter - has an annual production capacity of 780,000 t of aluminium and its rolling facility can produce 460,000 t of can sheet, end and tab stock for beverage cans, and auto body sheet. The remelting operations enable the recycling of 120,000 t of used beverage cans annually.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Governance, Environment and Social, which address key issues such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions.

The ASI CoC Standard sets out requirements for the creation of a Chain of Custody for material that is produced and processed through the value chain into diverse downstream sectors. The implementation of ASI’s CoC Standard links verified practices at successive steps of the supply chain – certified under the ASI Performance Standard – to the products produced by ASI Certified Entities.

ASI congratulates Maaden Aluminium

Fiona Solomon (Photo), Chief Executive Officer at ASI said: “ASI warmly congratulates Maaden Aluminium on this dual ASI Certification of its integrated operations in Saudi Arabia. The vertical integration of these operations from bauxite mining to UBC recycling, as well as casting and rolling makes it an important aluminium node in the Middle East. The company’s ASI Certifications are a significant boost for the responsible production and sourcing of ASI Certified materials for the global aluminium value chain and downstream aluminium-using sectors.”
